It is very important to do this initial setup for a good start. There are certain key list of things to do after installing WordPress and they are listed here in short. Let us see some Essential WordPress settings you have to do with your fresh WP website/blog.
Important WordPress Settings for Fresh Website/Blog
1. Delete Sample Post, Page and Comments
This is the very first thing to do after installing WordPress; Delete the Hello World default post, Sample Page and comment. When you delete default post, automatically deletes the comment related that one. Also read how to edit published post on WordPress
From WP dashboard, Posts > All Posts, click on Trash to delete post and associated comment.
From dashboard, Pages > All Pages, click on Trash to do the same.
2. Set up Site Title and Tagline
This part is very important because it appears in search engines. Depends on site title and tag line people are going to come to your website or blog. So make it catchier to attract visitors and it should content related too.
From dashboard, Settings > General
It is name of the website/blog and you should choose it according to your Niche.
Site Tagline explains the niche or content of site.
3. How to Enable or Disable User Registration
The new user registration option is available in General WordPress settings and you have to leave as like in the above image.
Note: If you want to all of your visitor to register and allows them to contribute like Multiblog, tick off “Anyone can register” option here. Also set as Contributor in new user default role.
4. Set up Time Zone and Language
Under General settings, set Timezone as your nearest city (example: New York). It is very important to synchronize with local time of your city to know the post timings and proper scheduling post.
Set the time format and date format as you like.
You have to set the website language in this settings page. WordPress supports over 162 languages which helps to gain worldwide fans for WP.
After set up these general settings, DON’T forget to Save Changes.
5. Add New Update Services (Ping List)
Go to Settings > Writing
Under the Update services, add new update services list or ping list which helps to notify other sites and search engines when new post published. You can also set default post category and post format as per your website or blog requirement.
6. Feed and Search engine Visibility Control
Go to WordPress Settings > Reading
You have to leave check box as empty in Discourage search engines from indexing this site (it is opposite to SEO).
Also select the Summary of article should show in feed of your Website or blog.
7. Setup WordPress Comment Settings
Go to WP settings > Discussion
Just check on boxes like in above screenshot of discussion settings for comments. It should be held in moderation and only approve the genuine one.
8. Enable Avatar
Under Discussion Settings > Avatars
Tick off on the display avatar and select Mystery Person as default one. You should rate the website or blog according to your niche or content.
9. WordPress Media Settings
Go to Settings > Media, to access the media settings page.
By default, WordPress allows you to create Thumbnail size, Medium and large size image. It is not good if you consider fast website page loading. The multiple sizes of same image will takes your storage space and slows up page loading. So set up media setting as like in the above image. Learn to upload image to Media Library here.
10. Set up WordPress Permalinks
Permalinks setting is define the URL structure of your website post links. Default permalink is not search engine (SEO) friendly. So, you have to change recommended setting as shown in the above image.
Go to WordPress settings > Permalinks
Select %postname% as in custom structure and it is SEO friendly URL structure.
11. Delete Hello Dolly Plugin
Go to Installed Plugins and click on Delete under the Hello Dolly Plugin.
12. Delete Default WP Themes
Go to Appearance > Themes, to see the installed WP themes list. Select any default WP theme by clicking on the Theme details.
It will open the theme details and below you can find Delete option for removing theme from it.
